Wardrobe Makeover

SewingAshley | November 10th, 2011

If you’re starting to notice wear and tear on your clothing but don’t have extra money for a shopping spree, it's time to pull out your Bernina Sewing Machine. There are many things you can do to spruce up old garments without spending a fortune.

Choose items that need a little mending, like a shirt with a worn and tattered collar or cuffs, which are usually the first areas to show wear and tear. Find fabric that matches or compliments the item you’re repairing. Make sure to:

  • Choose a fabric that is the same weight and texture as the original garment.
  • Carefully remove the worn cuffs or collar—you may want to take some pictures before you begin so you have something to go by.
  • Use the removed piece as a pattern for your new replacement design.
  • Follow the original grain line of the fabric when sewing so that the cuffs and collar will lay properly.

Once you have used the pattern to cut out the fabric, the rest is simple sewing! Attach the new pieces in the same way as the originals. You might try experimenting with different colors or prints to determine the most complimentary fabric for your project.  Who knows, you may create a whole new fashion trend.

Instead of throwing out garments at the first sign of a wear and tear. Use your Bernina machine to give your wardrobe a makeover, today!
